I stared writing a blog about possible projects I might dig into, which turned into How to Choose a Direction. During writing this very article, I realized that imaging my days and activities if any given project became my future profession, is a great way to decide what to focus on.
For example, if I focused on my YouTube creativity or photography videos, and that took off, I’d become a full time YouTuber. That would mean tracking stats, documenting everything I do, and coming up with video ideas. I would also have to play the YouTube game. These are mostly I don’t want to be doing every day for the rest of my life. I want to create like noone’s looking.
Some people thrive doing this. I just discovered a photographer (Lucy Lumen) living near me (who also likes Sonic Youth, or at least Sonic Youth T-shirts…) who is clearly making a huge go of all this. I’m impressed to see anyone follow through with the level of committment all this requires and will be watching as she grows.
I then imagined my life if my game development took off. I couldn’t imagine a MORE creatively fulling life. Comparing it to having my own design firm, which was once a dream of mine, there would be no clients; the projects would be decided on by me, or at least partly; i could dabble in MANY different creative mediums as much or as little as I pleased; I could become the creative director I always wanted to be. I could work out of a converted warehouse or factory and deck the place out with couches and stereos - it is my dream.
SO THAT IS WHAT I AM GOING TO DO. I’ve even made a start:
Leaving for Japan
… i’m about to. Firstly I’m catching up with my game dev buddy in Sydney when I hope we can talk about future endeavors. There will also be vegan pizza from Gigi’s, the place that once made me cry. In a good way. With their pizza and atmosphere.
There will be a lot of photography and wandering around and I will no doubt clarify things more. I do want to make some youtube videos but I think I will do for photograph or just for fun. I want to convert my Theory of Dirty article into a video as I think that could make an impact on a lot of people.
